Mom's Gingerbread Cake

1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup butter or shortening
2 eggs
1-1/2 cups molasses
1-1/2 tsp.soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
2 tsps. ginger
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1 cup hot water
2 1/2 cups flour
Cream the butter, or shortening, and the sugar together until fluffy. Add the eggs and molasses, beat well. To hot water add the soda and the spices, stir. Add to the sugar mixture and beat well. Pour batter into greased and floured 9 by 13 inch pan.
Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.
