German Chocolate Butter Cake

1 cup butter
2 cups sugar
4 eggs, separated
2-2/3 cups sifted cake flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 cup milk
2 tsp. vanilla
5 oz. German Sweet Chocolate

Cream butter and sugar. Add yolks, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add sifted dry ingredients, alternating with milk, and vanilla. Add in thirds, beating until smooth after each addition. Grate chocolate coarsely, reserving 1/3 cup for the topping.
Wash, and dry the beaters thoroughly before beating the egg whites until stiff, and fold into batter.
Add Remaining chocolate to the batter by hand; mixing it into the batter
Pour batter into a greased and floured 9 by 13 inch pan. Sprinkle remaining chocolate over top of cake batter.
Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 40 minutes.
