1 cup pitted dates
1-1/4 cups hot water
1 tsp. baking soda
1-3/4 cups sifted flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
3/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and lightly flour a 9 by 13 inch cake pan. Cut dates into small pieces. Add hot water and soda. Let stand until cool.
Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt, set aside. Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs and beat well. Add date mixture, beat well. Stir in the dry ingredients gradually, mixing well after each addition. Pour into prepared pan. Add the topping on top of the batter before baking.
Bake for 40-50 minutes or until cake tests done.
TOPPING:
1-6 oz. package semi-sweet chocolate chips
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup chopped nuts
