Swiss Chocolate Cherry Treats

1/2 cup chopped Maraschino cherries
1 cup shortening
1-1/4 cups sugar
1 egg, beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
1-1/2 cups sifted flour
1-1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1/2 cup cococnut
1 lrg. pkg. chocolate chips

Drain cherries, reserving syrup. Cream shortening; add sugar gradually. Beat in the egg and vanilla. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt together; add to the creamed mixture. Mix well; stir in remaining cherry syrup. Dough will be very stiff. Add pecans, cherries, coconut and chocolate chips. Spread the dough in a greased 13 by 9 inch pan.
Bake at 375* for 20-25 minutes. Cool and cut into bars.
