Orange Ginger Bars

2-1/2 cups sifted flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. ginger
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
1/3 cup molasses
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup orange marmalade
1/4 cup cool, strong coffee
Sift together the flour, salt, soda, ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg. Blend together the shortening, molasses and brown sugar. Cream well. Add the marmalade; mix well. Add the coffee alternately with the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture. Blend thoroughly after each addition. Spread into two well greased and lightly floured 13 by 9 inch pans.
Bake at 400* for 12-15 minutes. Cool in pans for 5 to 10 minutes, then cut into 2 by 1 inch bars. Remove from the pans with a spatula; cool thoroughly on a wire rack. Place bars together sandwich style with orange icing.
Orange Icing:
2 cups powdered sugar
2 tbl. soft butter
1 tsp. grated orange rind
2-3 tbl. orange juice
Beat until smooth and creamy.
