1/2 cup shortening
2-1 oz. squares unsweetened chocolate
1 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup buttermilk
1-1/2 cups sifted flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Melt the shortening and unsweetened chocolate together in a saucepan. Cool for 10 minutes. Stir in the brown sugar. Beat in the egg, vanilla and buttermilk. Sift together the dry ingredients and add to the chocolate mixture. Stir in nuts and chocolate pieces. Drop from a teaspoon onto a greased baking sheet. Bake at 375* for about 10 minutes.
Mocha Frosting:
1/4 cup butter
2 tbl. cocoa
2 tsp. instant coffee powder
dash salt
2-1/2 cups powdered sugar
1-1/2 tsp. vanilla
3 tbl. milk
Cream together the butter, cocoa, instant coffee and salt. Beat in the powdered sugar, vanilla and enough milk to reach spreading consistency.
