3/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup molasses
1 egg, well beaten
2 cups flour
2 tsp. soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. cloves
Cream the shortening and sugar together thoroughly. Add molasses and egg; mix well. Sift remaining ingredients together; add to the creamed mixture. Beat until smooth. Shape into walnut sized balls. Roll in additional sugar. place 2 inches apart on greased baking sheet. Bake in preheated 350* oven until edges are browned.
