Black Cherry Muffins

2 cups flour
1 tbl. baking powder
1/4 tsp.salt
1 cup pitted black cherries, coarsely chopped
6 tbl. butter or margarine, softened
2/3 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup milk
Preheat oven to 400 F. Grease or paper-line 12 (2 1/2-inch) muffin cups.
In a small bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt. Toss 1 tablespoon of the flour mixture with the cherries; set aside. In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla; beat 3 minutes. Alternately beat in flour mixture and the milk. Fold in cherries. Spoon into muffin cups. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until golden and wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Remove from pan. Cool on wire rack.
