2-2/3 flour
1-1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1/2 cup sugar
3 tbl. vegetable shortening
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1/4 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup sourdough starter
1/2 cup mashed ripe bananas
Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
Cream the sugar and vegetable shortening, add the egg and beat well. Stir in vanilla, buttermilk, sourdough starter and bananas. Add the sifted dry ingredients and mix well.
Turn the dough out onto a well floured surface (about half at a time), knead well, adding just enough flour until dough handles well.
Roll out, cut into doughnuts, and place on aluminum foil; proceed with remaining dough. Heat oil to 390* and fry.
Drain on paper towels. Sugar if desired.
