1 cup sugar
2 tbl. shortening
2 eggs
1 cup sour milk
1 tsp soda
2 heaping tsp baking powder
1 tsp nutmeg
4 cups flour
In a large mixing bowl, combine sugar and shortening. Beat in eggs. Add the sour milk and blend well.
Sift the dry ingredients and nutmeg together. Blend well and turn out onto a floured board.
Roll the dough out to a thickness of 1/2 inch. Use a 3 inch doughnut cutter with the center in place, cut out the donuts and holes.
Heat 2 inches of oil in a 4 qt. pan to 370° F. Fry donuts and holes a few at a time, about 2 - 3 minutes. Turn only once.
While hot, if desired, roll donuts and holes in sugar and cinnamon or confectionary sugar.
