In a saucepan, heat until warm:

3 cups buttermilk
1/2 cup water

1/2 cup oil
2 tsp. salt
4 tbsp. yeast
5 tbsp. sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
3 tsp. vanilla

Stir well making sure the ingredients are dissolved. Then add 1 teaspoon baking soda and approximately 9 cups flour having a light mixture - knead and place in a greased bowl to rise until double in size. Roll out 1/2 inch thick and cut into donuts and let them raise again. Fry in deep fat at 350 degrees. While still warm dip in 1 cup powdered sugar, 3 teaspoons vanilla and enough water to make a thin glaze. Makes approximately 5 dozen.
